NEET, UGC NET cancellation 2024 and many more
The NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination has recently come under intense scrutiny due to multiple controversies. These include the awarding of excessive grace marks—over 50 per person, exam paper leaks occurring the day before the exam in some states, and the subsequent arrests of NEET aspirants and their parents. The overall handling of the examination has raised questions about the competence of the authorities in conducting the exam fairly and securely.
Following widespread protests and backlash from students, concerns have emerged about candidates scoring improbably high marks, such as 719, which seems feasible only with the help of grace marks. In response, the Supreme Court intervened, invalidating any unwarranted grace marks and issuing a stern warning that any evidence of cheating, even as little as 0.0001%, would lead to severe consequences for all involved, including students and officials from the National Testing Agency (NTA).
The Supreme Court emphasized that individuals involved in such malpractices should not be allowed into the medical profession, where they would be responsible for patients' lives. This situation has not only highlighted the incompetence in conducting the NEET but has also raised concerns about the integrity of other exams, such as the UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test). The UGC NET, a test for teacher eligibility, was also cancelled after cybercrime specialists from the Ministry of Home Affairs found that its confidentiality and trustworthiness had been compromised.
In India, where unemployment rates are high, government jobs represent a beacon of hope for many, offering a promise of equality and meritocracy. However, the recent exam scandals have tested the public's faith in this system. Paper leaks and unfair awarding of marks undermine the dreams of countless students who work tirelessly for years to become doctors or teachers, aiming to elevate their families' socioeconomic status.
These students already face immense pressure, unable to support their parents financially while grappling with an uncertain future and competing for a limited number of jobs. The government's failure to ensure the integrity of these exams adds to their anxiety and frustration.
The authorities must recognize the gravity of their responsibilities. Rising unemployment coupled with exam malpractice only exacerbates public discontent. Ensuring fair employment opportunities is a fundamental right, and the state must uphold this by maintaining the integrity of competitive exams.
